Tuxedos & Formal Wear: The Definitive Guide to Black Tie Attire
Master the art of formal dressing. From the perfect lapel to the right accessories, consult with a Master Tailor who understands the rules.
Why a Suit Will Never Be a Tuxedo
Many people use the words “suit” and “tuxedo” to mean the same thing. They are not. A business suit is for work; a tuxedo is for a special occasion. The biggest difference is satin (or silk).
A tuxedo has satin on the lapels, on the buttons, and a thin stripe down the side of the trousers. A suit has none of these. A tuxedo is worn with a formal shirt and a bow tie, never a necktie or a belt.
The Five Essential Rules of Black Tie
“Black Tie” is a specific dress code. Wearing it correctly shows respect for the event.
As your tailoring experts, here are the simple rules we follow.
1. The Lapel
The lapels must be silk or satin. You can choose a Peak Lapel (the classic, strong look) or a Shawl Lapel (a smooth, rounded shape).
2. The Shirt
A formal shirt is required. It should have a “piquĂ©” bib (a formal texture), French cuffs (for cufflinks), and use studs instead of regular buttons.
3. The Trousers
Formal trousers must have a single satin stripe down the side. They are worn with suspenders, never a belt.
4. The Waist
Your waist must be covered. You have two choices: a cummerbund (a silk sash) or a formal waistcoat.
5. The Shoes
The shoes must be black and formal. Black patent leather (high-shine) shoes are the traditional choice, but highly polished black oxfords also work.
Beyond Black: Your Formal Wear Options
Our Master Tailors can craft the perfect formal look for your event.

The Classic Tuxedo
The gold standard. We recommend classic black or a deep midnight blue, which often looks even richer in photos. This is always the right answer for a black-tie event.

The Dinner Jacket
For a more personal, high-style look. This is a jacket in a different color or fabric (like velvet), worn with classic black tuxedo trousers. It’s a confident and sophisticated choice.

White Tie
This is the most formal dress code, even above black tie. It is very rare and has strict rules (including a white bow tie and a tailcoat). We are one of the few tailors with the mastery to craft this for state or royal events.
